Estimating Sheet Flow Velocities Using Quinine as a Fluorescent Tracer: Bare, Mulched, Vegetated and Paved Surfaces

When direct flow velocity measurements are not feasible, the use of tracers can be a valuable tool. In present study, both laboratory and field experiments were conducted to evaluate applicability quinine as fluorescent tracer for estimating mean sheet velocities in different ambient light surface morphology conditions. Quinine excels low-light conditions when exposed UVA light. This was compared with dye thermal tracers, all liquid form. these tracing techniques injected into flow, after which estimated by tracking leading edge plumes applying correction factor calculate (in water column). The visibility evaluated measuring relative luminance contrast ratio plumes. Results show that used estimate over wide variety soil urban surfaces; it has better comparison but, some conditions, lower than tracer. Although is invisible under bright this technique requires low-cost experimental setup useful (e.g., night; twilight; shielded environments).
